The Port Douglas boat
ramp is a well-maintained two-lane concrete ramp that makes launching into
Dickson Inlet, Mowbray River, Low Isles, Packers Creek, and the outer reefs a
breeze. It’s suitable for small boats up to 20 feet, and there’s a jetty right next
to the ramp to help with launching and retrieval. The water clarity here is
great, but watch out at low tide since the ramp surface gets incredibly
slippery. A floating pontoon sits just a few metres away, adding to the
convenience.
There’s plenty of
parking close to the ramp, along with public restrooms nearby. However, on busy
weekends, especially during the Sunday Market, finding a spot can be tricky.
There is an alternative car park across the road to the entrance although some boaters
find it a bit of a hassle to park in this area. There’s also a wash-down area
but bring your own hose and connectors. The downside of this boat ramp is that
there are no fish cleaning facilities available in the ramp so you’ll have to
take your catch elsewhere.
The ramp is
conveniently located right next to the local Coast Guard office which is
helpful if you need any info about the area’s fisheries. The ramp is also right
next to a restaurant, which is an ideal spot to sit on the verandah overlooking
the inlet and mountains and enjoy a cold beer while you relive the day’s best
catches.
